Paul Oakenfold: Creamfields 1998

“Oakey’s best set ever!” was exclaimed throughout the 90s and 00s after many a set of the legend that is Paul Oakenfold

In the late 90s I was fortunate enough to witness in the flesh the master at work and the best set I got to rave was at Creamfields in 2000, however for me it’s not my “Oakey’s best set ever!”

That accolade goes to the set that Oakenfold played two years previous at the very first Creamfields in 98, but I was not present at this so I had to rely on BBC Radio One’s Essential Mix.

For me this tribute mix was peak 90s Oakenfold and the Trance genre also. It starts off with the Ibiza classic “El Nino” by Agnelli & Nelson and powers through to the Paul van Dyk mix of Binary Finary’s “1998” and Armin van Buuren’s “Blue Fear”.

The set then drops down to Man With No Name’s “Vavoom!” before steaming in to Greece 2000’s “Three Drives”, finishing off with the pounding techno of The Shrink’s “Nervous Breakdown” and the mashup of Pink Floyd vs Underworld’s “Brown Acid”
